With the happy success of the dramatic society fresh in our minds, we realised in 2018, just as we were about to embark on panto #2, Peter Pan, that the children were roaming around during school holidays looking for something to do besides play ball in the streets or climb over fences to steal fruit from trees. The holiday club was started and quickly became very popular, not only amongst the children but the parents as well. Working parents knew that their youngsters were occupied and safe.
We introduced quizzes, musical instruments, arts and crafts, games, martial arts and more. There is always a sarmie and a cool drink, and during winter, soup is provided by local villagers. We also used the dancing as a practice session for the annual pantomime. The arts and crafts lessons were centred around that year’s theme, and the children were included in making sets. They were learning teamwork, tolerance, patience, and much more than just art or dance.
