Small town life is different to the city and as such we make much of our own entertainment. There are no theatres, but plenty of small town drama!
We started a dramatic society during 2017, which now in 2024 boasts a history of four pantomimes, a few concerts and a one-act play. Hugely enjoyed by the locals, and performed by aspirant singers and actors from age six to 60, these became the highlight of the year, giving the local youngsters the opportunity to learn the skills of musical theatre, dance, acting and teamwork.
Exposure to arts and culture is severely lacking in village schools, so this has been a valuable tool, not only in educating them but also in exposing them to a wider environment than their initials frame of reference. The hope is that the children will want more, and that they will explore their natural talents and get an opportunity to use them, ultimately sending them on their way better equipped to cope with the adult world.
We now have a huge costume wardrobe and the valuable assistance of a musician who taught for many years overseas in schools, as well as a sound engineer from the UK. There are also adults in the community with skills such as writing, directing, voice coaching and dancing.
